The comeback

Where he was. Where he is now.

Where he was

A 2016 All-Star and AL ERA champion, fresh off an MVP winter with the Toros, looking to get back to the form that made him one of the best arms in the American League.

The data-driven approach

Shawn and Aaron go back a long way: a championship together in Vancouver in 2011, Aaron’s rookie year, and the Arizona Fall League in 2014. The off-season plan paired one session a week with Shawn and four training days with Nicole Gabriel Training at TPSI. Shawn screened him weekly and pointed Nicole to what needed work, and the numbers were retested along the way.

Where he is now

Throwing-arm shoulder strength up 28 to 58%, hip abduction in the 100th percentile for men his age, rotational power up 24% to 10.13 m/s, above the MLB average, and steadier planks across the board. In Shawn’s words: “After working with us for the past few months, he feels like he did at his peak.”

The comeback

Where he was. Where he is now.

Where he was

Playing travel ball and catching bullpens takes a toll on the body. MLB catchers take their recovery and training seriously, and so does Cody. Hands-on recovery and correctives have helped Cody become known for his durability.

The data-driven approach

Weekly preventative arm care with Shawn, quick treatment of minor aches before they turn into injuries, and strength retested about once a month. Shawn and Nicole Gabriel compare notes on how he’s moving and recovering, and adjust his care and his training together.

Where he is now

Right-arm shoulder strength up 27 to 111%, forearm strength up 75 to 130%, grip up 26%, a steadier plank, and his fastball up from 70 to 80 mph. He hasn’t missed time.

★★★★★
“Cody sees Shawn weekly for preventative arm care and treatment of any minor pain or discomfort. Shawn works closely alongside Nicole Gabriel Training and Tampa Premier Sports Institute to help Cody rehab when needed, stay healthy, and continue progressing safely. Having Shawn and Nicole communicate and work together gives me peace of mind as Cody’s mom.”
